MY KITCHEN ESSENTAILS

With rain pouring down outside and constant news updates on Coronavirus Spring seems like a long way away. I’m sure everyone is confused and a little worried about what the next weeks or months will bring. Will we be self isolating or just keeping away from large gatherings. We all wait to hear what the days ahead will bring. I am naturally optimistic so not getting ahead of it. Of course I am very happy we left China last year as if had been the same time this year it may have been a totally different story.

I am dismayed at how some people seem to think that pasta and toilet rolls plus gallons of hand sanitiser will see them through! Normal buying means there’s enough for everyone, no young mums will be left worrying about how they’ll cope, older people and people without cars wouldn’t need to be left without their usual supplies. It makes no sense whatsoever and makes me despair of human nature.

I am very fortunate in that I always have a full larder, not because I panic buy, but do buy offers when they appear. Often I share these with my daughters, after all it would take us a long time to get through huge packs of cereal and large bottles of squash. That being said my cupboards are well stocked. I love cooking and baking and I hate not having ingredients to hand. Recently I’ve been trying to cut down on packaging so I’ve been filling glass jars with loose foods which will last a while. Added to that is what my daughter calls my Brexit Exit cupboard which is where I keep my homemade jams, pickles and chutneys. I happily hand these out to friends and family when they come to visit.

Dried pulses flours etc.

Jams and Chutney

Tins, pastas stock cubes etc

So as you can see I won’t be out panic buying. I’ll shop as usual and keep making bread and jams, biscuits, cakes and pies and of course our weekly soups as usual. I’ve homemade stocks and the usual array of frozen foods too so whatever happens it will be business as usual in my kitchen.
And just in case anyone is wondering....................

There’s a bottle or two of wine for a rainy day!
Oh dear is that rain I see pouring down outside šŸ˜‚

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON
