ON THE EIGHTEENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS……

 Today didn’t quite go according to plan. A visit from family didn’t happen as we are being careful, as we’ve always been, about this new covid variant and none of us want to end up isolating and not being able to spend Christmas together. I was really disappointed but looking that it wasn’t cancelled but merely postponed. Let’s just keep fingers crossed we all keep healthy until Christmas next week 🤞🏻

The weather did nothing to cheer me up as the fog never lifted all day. It was grey and miserable. A day for staying at home for sure. A Christmas film was the order of the day. Watched The Coopers and have to say enjoyed it even though I’d seen it before  



This photo was taken at three in the afternoon and had been like this since we woke up and just got worse. By the time Hamish was having his last walk we had to light him up to be seen. He’s never too happy about wearing anything apart from his collar and lead but it seemed like even he realised that he needed something to make him visible 😂

So it was without whining that he headed out. I think he actually enjoyed it. 


Of course I had done a lot of cooking for the weekend, and bought in lots of breakfast supplies. The latter is now in the freezer, with enough left out for a nice full Scottish tomorrow morning. A rare treat. 
Lasagne we had for tea, with leftovers to be frozen or eaten another day. A chicken pasta bake will also find its way into the freezer.

But the chocolate orange cheesecake will have to be either picked at for a few days with perhaps some of it going to a neighbour or two. It’s not a small cheesecake but a baked one to serve 10! I’m sure someone will be happy to take a piece off my hands. 



So dinner over and with strictly on TV I thought a nice cocktail might help the day feel a bit better. 
An espresso martini has been in my mind to make so tonight was the night. Got together the vodka, coffee liqueur and made the espresso. Put it all in cocktail shaker and shook!!! As I poured it out I was a little disappointed with the result. I knew it would taste ok but didn’t look as good as I’d expected. No foam. However we drank it and I was right, it tasted fine. I got on to finding where I’d gone wrong. The conclusion was that I needed more ice and a pinch of salt and needed to shake until I could shake no more. So now I will have to try again with hopefully the aesthetics matching the flavour. I’ll let you know.

One thing during this lockdown period is that it has me trying all sorts of things I’d never done before. Some I’d thought of, others I never dreamt of doing. Today for example, with the possibility of mandatory face masks on the horizon I decided to make some using up all my fat squares I had lying around. A friend put the idea into my head so I have Christine to thank for this. I enjoyed putting them together. I will pass them on to family or friends as requested.  Candles was one project I’d always planned to do so what better time than now. I sent off for a starter  kit to begin with.  I was quite happy with the results so then moved on to preparing all the ends of candles I had been saving. Had there been no lockdown I wonder if I’d ever got around to using them up! I chopped it very finely, into flakes, then melted as I had with the purchased wax. Thankfully it was quite successful. Recycling a Step too Far?

I am trying to do what little I can to save the planet. Easier said than done a lot of the time. Perhaps I'm not quite as committed as I could, or indeed I should be, but I really am doing my best and trying hard. Baby steps. Surely anything is better than nothing. My main bugbears are plastics, and wasting food. I recycle what I can and take brown paper bags to the supermarket to put my fruit and veg into, and loose bakery items can be put into them too. However, on so many occasions I am unable to purchase loose products. I have now taken to unwrapping them, once I'm through the checkout of course, and leave the supermarket to deal with the issue. Yes, I do get a few funny looks, but hey who cares I'm saying the planet. LOL. I know this doesn't get rid of the problem but if more people did it them maybe all supermarkets would start to take the issue more seriously. I know some supermarkets are starting down that road and good for them, let's hope more follow sui...

A Life in Lockdown.........

It seems to me, from what I read and from speaking to people, life seems to fall into several groups of what we once referred to as chores but which now seem less onerous during lockdown. These are the household duties. Cooking, cleaning and gardening then there is exercise and lastly hobbies.  Now let me address the exercise first. Pre lockdown we occasionally took a walk around the neighbourhood and now we do it every day, going further and further and it’s an easy way of getting exercise. We’re getting to know people streets away, and people close by, we are meeting with others who we only normally see in local coffee shop. It’s opened our eyes to what a lovely community we are living in. A local FB page for residents is doing a great job. It feels as if everyone is just waiting for someone to pop by so they can pop out for a chat. While walking the other day the smell of lilac was amazing.
